Obama: A disaster for civil liberties

He may prove the most disastrous president in our history in terms of civil liberties.

President Obama failed to close Guantanamo Bay, continued warrantless surveillance and military tribunals and asserted the right to kill U.S. citizens he views as terrorists. With the 2012 presidential election before us, the country is again caught up in debating national security issues, our ongoing wars and the threat of terrorism. There is one related subject, however, that is rarely mentioned: civil liberties.

Protecting individual rights and liberties — apart from the right to be tax-free — seems barely relevant to candidates or voters. One man is primarily responsible for the disappearance of civil liberties from the national debate, and he is Barack Obama. While many are reluctant to admit it, Obama has proved a disaster not just for specific civil liberties but the civil liberties cause in the United States.

One Response to “Obama: A disaster for civil liberties”

  1. Rupen Savoulian Says:

Obama is not George W Bush – he is worse.

Having inherited the predatory and undemocratic policies of his predecessor, he has rapidly expanded the use of electronic surveillance, phone-tapping, and continued the illegal jailing of detainees who are simply suspected of terrorism. He has failed to close Guantanamo, and has escalated the computerised drone warfare into Yemen, Pakistan and Somalia.

Obama the antiwar candidate of 2008 is a representative of a ruthless financial oligarchy, a military-industrial complex eager to assert its influence over vast, economically important and militarily strategic areas of the globe.

When Yanukovich took office from Yushchenko in the Ukrainian elections of 2010, Yanukovich changed course, reversing the pro-western and pro-NATO policies of his predecessor. Obama should have taken a leaf out of Yanukovich’s book. Obama has presided over another NATO war, this one in Libya along with his European counterparts. It is time to call Obama what he really is; a war criminal, a purveyor of state terrorism and mass murder.
